You may have heard the term Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and thought “what in the world is that?” Or maybe you just lumped it in with Search Engine Optimization (SEO). But then there’s Pay Per Click (PPC). Where does that fall?

It’s all SEM.

What is Search Engine Marketing?

SEM encompasses all of the the search related digital marketing that you see on the internet. Whether it’s paid or organic, it falls under the umbrella of SEM.

Paid SEM

Paid search engine marketing would include things like Google AdWords, or Bing Ads. It’s those ads you see at the top and bottom of the results page when you do a search for “Best Pizza Place in Town.”

For search ads you’ll target specific keywords or phrases related to your website. When users search for your words or phrases your ad will show up with the rest of the results.

These ads are usually bid-based, meaning you are competing with other websites to have your ad shown on the results page. If you have a lot of competition for those keywords, your cost can go up. We can work with you to put together a paid search strategy for Google AdWords and other platforms that will help keep those costs under control.

Organic SEM

Your user does a Google search, see’s your website in the results and clicks on your link. Organic search engine marketing is that simple. Well, maybe not so much.

There are lots of things you can do on your website, and more specifically on your webpage, to increase your visibility in organic searches. Things like titles, descriptions, headings, even links in and out of your page can help lift you higher on the search results. These all fall under the heading of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and we’ll dive deeper into that subject in another article.
